Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith showed he’s more than a sharpshooting, shirtless persona in a short video for Uninterrupted, where he described how he’s thankful for forgiveness this Thanksgiving.
“If I had to chose the one thing I’m truly thankful for it’s the power of forgiveness,” he said. “I think a lot of people hold on to grudges and stuff that other people have done or said to them.
“For me personally there’s been a lot of situations in my life where people have have said things or done things to me. And up until about a year ago I haven’t forgiven them for it.”
Smith’s heaviest words revolved around a 2009 car accident in which Smith was driving and his friend Andre Bell was killed.
“I had never really forgave myself,” Smith said. “The family has and friends have, but I haven’t for myself. But now I can honestly say I can live and deal with it through forgiveness.”
Prior to serving 30 days jail time for the accident, Smith told the court “it’s been unbearable to deal with.” Now, more than seven years removed from the incident, Smith seems to have grown and moved on.
