LeBron James took to social media on Monday night to apparently snipe at Kyrie Irving
“Never let another ride your wave!!!” James tweeted, in seeming reference to Irving, who requested a trade last month in part to get out of his shadow.
Irving’s trade request came in the wake of speculation regarding James’ future. The superstar is expected to opt out of his contract after the 2017-18 season, and there have been rumors about a potential exit, perhaps to Los Angeles.
James was reportedly shocked by Irving’s request, but formers Cavaliers GM David Griffin wasn’t.
In an appearance Monday on ESPN’s “The Jump,” Griffin said of Irving, “This is a guy who handled the situation exactly like he was supposed to.”
Irving requested a trade privately to Dan Gilbert, and the Cavs were able to keep it under wraps for two weeks, a nearly unheard of length of time in the internet age.
The Celtics, who lost to Cleveland in the Eastern Conference Finals last season, still seem unlikely because they’re in direct competition with the Cavs, but if Irving wants to go there, Boston likely has the pieces for a deal. The Knicks, Heat, Timberwolves and Spurs are the four teams that previously had been reported to be on Irving’s list.
Given that Irving doesn’t have a no-trade clause, the Cavs don’t have to cater to what he wants. Especially if James wants to see him out the door.
