Roger Federer hangs on to beat Marin Cilic in Australian Open final

Roger Federer has won his 20th Grand Slam singles title, surviving a five-set test from a resurgent Marin Cilic in the Australian Open men’s final.

Federer got off to a dominant start, taking a 4-0 lead in the first set. Cilic, the 2014 U.S. Open champion, settled down and fought valiantly again Federer, who won 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 on Sunday.

Cilic, who’s 6-6, kept Federer moving and came up with big shots at critical moments but fell short when it mattered most. The 29-year-old is ranked sixth in the world.

It was the sixth Australian Open title for Federer, who advanced to the final when Hyeon Chung retired in their semifinal match.

At 36, Federer is the only male player with 20 Grand Slam singles titles. He joins Margaret Court, Steffi Graf and Serena Williams as the only players to reach 20 major singles championships.
