Racing veteran Takuma Sato will join Andretti Autosport for the 2017 IndyCar season, the team announced Friday. He will drive the No. 26 Honda-powered machine.
“I think joining the team will be a new and positive opportunity for Takuma,” said Michael Andretti, CEO of Andretti Autosport, in a news release. “He’s not yet had the chance to be part of a larger team where the drivers collaborate. Takuma has strong racing experience and we are looking forward to providing a team atmosphere where he can continue to grow, develop and be successful.”
Sato has had 118 IndyCar Series starts, making it to the podium five times with one victory, and securing five pole positions.
“I am extremely excited that we were able to work out a deal with Michael and Andretti Autosport,” Sato said in the news release. “The team has proven year after year that they are ultra-competitive on all types of circuits.”
Sato fills out the four-car Verizon IndyCar Series field for Andretti, joining Ryan Hunter-Reay, Alexander Rossi and Marco Andretti.
